Hey There! My name is Vericia Miller and I am the Founder and Executive Director of HOOC, NFP. I have been working in social services for over 15 years now, and I absolutely love what I do. I have spent most of this time working with at-risk youth and adults in Boston, Chicago, and cities throughout my home state of California. Over the years, I have assumed many different roles: Licensed Social Worker, Case Manager, Residential Supervisor, Counselor, etc., but I sincerely see myself as a servant leader. I have been working with victims and survivors of human trafficking for six years, and domestic violence, for approximately 10 years. Yes, I am passionate about what I do, but human services is one of those fields where mere passion is not enough. Don't get me wrong, passion is important, but I see human services and empowering women as a calling. Outside of my experience in human services, I have also taught at the college level, on and off, for 10 years.
I am a graduate of Grambling State University with a Bachelors degree in Social Work. I am also a proud graduate of Boston University where I received a Masters degree in Criminal Justice. I'm grateful for all accomplishments; however, the bulk of my learning experiences did not come from a formal classroom setting or a book. The people I've interacted with, the poor choices I've made; the wise choices I've made, etc. has everything to do with my calling to human services. Born and raised in South Central Los Angeles, my mother always emphasized the importance of an education. She was a single parent whom I had the example of work ethic, integrity and humility. I can honestly say that if it weren't for my mother and grandmother, the two women who raised me, I'm not quite sure where I'd be or what I'd be doing. It is for these reasons that I understand the importance of support. Support is a form of empowerment that HOOC, NFP gives each and every woman we work with.
No matter your situation, it begins and ends with your inner-circle. My own personal life experiences and struggles is what led me to this life that I love so much. I want HOOC, NFP to continue being that means of social support and knowledge women need to get back on their feet, and in turn, use their lives to make a difference in the lives of others. After all, isn't that what life's all about!
